The Japan Karate Association (JKA) safeguards and develops its own line of Karate-do from Japan. Since 1948, the organization has combined technical training with self-discipline, respect, and character development.

The JKA is a Japanese public organization dedicated to the study, instruction, and dissemination of Karate-do. The federation trains specialized instructors according to its own curricula and supports practitioners in Japan and abroad.

The JKA approach views daily training as a way to develop technique, discipline, and character. The lessons focus on a strong foundation, correct execution, and an attitude befitting the Japanese martial art.

History

Associated with Karate-do since 1948

The Japan Karate Association was founded in 1948. In 1958, the organization was recognized as a General Incorporated Association, and on March 21, 2012, the JKA was recognized by the Japanese government as a Public Interest Incorporated Association.

The development of the JKA is connected with the spread of Karate-do as a Japanese martial art and with the legacy of Grandmaster Funakoshi Gichin. The organization built on a clear technical and educational tradition.

In 1957, the JKA organized the first national championship. Youth, senior, and world championships followed later, enabling the JKA school to continue developing in Japan and internationally.

Activities and role

Instruction, examinations and championships

The JKA trains specialized instructors and provides lessons and training from its main dojo in Japan. Instructors are also sent to other countries upon request to guide international practitioners.

The organization holds national championships for adults and juniors, a senior championship, and the Funakoshi Gichin Cup as an international world championship. The world championships are held every three years according to the JKA calendar.

Dan examinations, qualifications, instructor training programs and technical guidelines give students and teachers a clear path for further development.

The JKA/WF works with official member organizations and certified dojos and clubs across various continents. The international map features affiliated groups in Asia, Oceania, North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, among others.

An accredited JKA dojo gives students access to the JKA training method and official Dan and instructor qualifications within the international JKA structure.

The local dojo remains the place where tradition takes shape every day: through repetition, attention to detail, and the relationship between teacher and student.
