Profile

A Dutch JKA Federation

JKA Netherlands forms a national community within the JKA World Federation. The federation focuses on promoting and practising JKA Karate-do in the Netherlands, with an emphasis on a strong technical foundation and the values of the Japanese martial arts.

Students can develop from their first kihon and karate techniques to advanced training in kata, kumite, grading exams, and competition karate. Instructors and advanced karate practitioners continue to deepen their knowledge through seminars, national training sessions, and international exchange.

Over the years

History

The Dutch JKA tradition

JKA Netherlands builds on the Japan Karate Association and the tradition of Funakoshi Gichin Sensei. The JKA World Federation spreads Karate-do worldwide while seeking to preserve the art's traditional standards and values.

In the Netherlands, this tradition developed its own community of dojos, teachers, and athletes. The development of JKA Netherlands is connected with the work of Peter Wewengkang Sensei, who played an important role in the Dutch JKA community for many practitioners.

The tradition lives on through daily training, seminars, examinations, and the passing of knowledge from teacher to student.

Activities and role

Training, exams and competitions

JKA Netherlands organizes national training sessions, seminars and activities for different levels. Athletes can work on kihon, kata and kumite and prepare for kyu and dan grade examinations.

The calendar also includes selection and pre-selection training sessions, national championships and international competitions such as the JKA England Open. For instructors and advanced karate practitioners, seminars with experienced JKA instructors are an important part of their development.

Training remains focused on correct technique, attention to detail, physical fitness and the proper attitude in the dojo.

Connection

Membership and participation

Dojo's and Dutch practitioners

JKA Netherlands connects dojo's and karate practitioners in different parts of the country. In these dojo's, children, young people and adults learn the basics of Karate-do and gradually build their technical level step by step.

The dojo is the place where the relationship between teacher and student is central. Repetition, concentration, respect and commitment form the daily foundation of training.

Through national training sessions, examinations and joint seminars, practitioners meet each other outside their own dojo and the Dutch JKA community remains connected.

Why this matters

Impact and meaning

Karate as education and lifelong development

JKA Netherlands views Karate-do as a way to develop the body and mind. Training requires patience, self-control, perseverance, and respect for others.

For young athletes, Karate provides a clear environment in which they learn to deal with exertion, rules, responsibility, and cooperation. Adults and seniors can continue deepening their technique and knowledge throughout their lives.

The value of JKA Karate therefore lies not only in achieving a rank or winning a competition, but also in the person shaped through training.
