Profile

Profile and position

The Dutch Martial Arts Authority is an independent organization for the Dutch world of kickboxing, muay thai and MMA. Municipalities and other authorities can turn to the VA with questions about the quality, safety and organization of these martial arts.

The organization stands alongside the governing bodies and promoters, not above them as a sports federation. This independent position makes it possible to support sector-wide agreements and quality measures.

Over the years

History

History

The Dutch Combat Sports Authority was established in 2017 in response to growing attention to safety, supervision and organization within full-contact combat sports events.

Its establishment brought together several tasks: clear guidelines for events, better protection for young athletes, a uniform digital competition record book, a licensing system and monitoring of the quality of combat sports schools.

Since then, the VA has worked with the government and the combat sports sector on a structural approach to safety, health, integrity and quality.

Activities and role

Activities and role

The VA develops and supports industry-wide guidelines for full-contact martial arts events. The organization also monitors the quality of martial arts gyms and events and advises municipalities on issues relating to kickboxing, muay thai, and MMA.

An important aspect is protecting young athletes. Age limits and rules regarding kicks and punches to the head should contribute to the responsible development of young martial artists.

In addition, the VA works with the digital Fightpassport, licenses, audits, disciplinary proceedings, and safeguarding concerns. This means the organization's work affects both daily martial arts gym operations and the broader competition structure.

Membership and participation

Partnerships and membership

The Dutch Martial Arts Authority is an associate member of NOC*NSF and is supported by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.

The organization also works with municipalities, government bodies, sports federations, promoters, gyms, officials, medical experts, and confidential advisors. This cooperation is important because safety and quality cannot be ensured by one party alone.

Why this matters

Impact and meaning

Impact and significance

The VA has contributed to a more cohesive approach to safety, health, and integrity within Dutch martial arts. The organization brings together parties that previously worked in a fragmented way and makes joint quality agreements more visible.

For athletes, this means more attention to appropriate guidance, responsible competition policies, and the quality of the environment in which they train and compete. For municipalities and organizers, the VA provides a recognizable point of contact for sector-wide questions.
