Portuguese Boxing Federation

Boxing came to Portugal at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1909 a bout took place between the Englishman Drumond and the American Sam MacVea, and it generated so much interest that amateur clubs soon emerged, such as Ginásio Clube Português, Clube Arte e Sport, Sport Cruz Quebradense and Clube Português de Recreio e Desporto.

The federation was founded in Lisbon on March 14, 1914. Its first president was Manuel da Silveira of Ginásio Clube Português. On December 11, 1993, the federation was granted the status of a sports organization serving the public interest.

A key figure in Portuguese boxing history is Ricardo Ferraz, nicknamed “Senhor Boxe,” who devoted nearly forty years to the sport as a trainer and administrator and served as president of the Lisbon boxing association. His career highlight was the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980, where he coached João Miguel “Paquito,” the only Portuguese boxer to compete there.

According to its statutes, the FPB is the highest body that exclusively and nationwide promotes, leads, and directs the practice and teaching of boxing, with the corresponding regulatory and disciplinary powers. Its mandate expressly covers both Olympic and professional boxing.

It represents boxing to the government and the five regional associations of Porto, Aveiro, Lisbon, Setúbal, and the Algarve, and maintains records of clubs, trainers, and athletes, as well as the professional rankings and managers.

The federation sets the season calendar, organizes the national cup and championships, manages registrations, training courses, and communiqués, and has a separate program for adapted boxing, adapted boxing.

At European Boxing Portugal is registered as a endorsed member and therefore not as a full member.

The federation itself mentions in its articles of association memberships of AIBA, the European Boxing Confederation, and the European Boxing Union, of which it is the sole representative in Portugal. This description has not been updated to reflect the current situation regarding World Boxing.

Portuguese boxing is growing mainly through its own international tournaments. The Portimão Box Cup at the Portimão Arena strengthened its international status in 2026, and the Braga Open Boxing attracted so many registrations that only three hundred places remained.

The Taça de Portugal of 2026 was decided in Amadora and crowned the national team champions. On the professional circuit, the Lusitânia Fight Night honored Portuguese boxing figure José Pinto Lopes.
