Swedish Boxing Federation

The Swedish Boxing Federation (SBF) is Sweden’s national boxing federation and was founded in 1919. It is one of the country’s older sports federations and oversees ten districts with approximately 200 clubs and around 35,000 members.

The organization

Profile

The SBF focuses primarily on amateur boxing: the national teams, the development of club activities and the training of officials, including the country's highest-level coaching program. In addition, the federation promotes and coordinates Swedish boxing nationally and internationally.

The federation's values are joy, respect, cooperation, community, equity and equality. Its goal is to make boxing one of Sweden's leading sports, with grassroots and elite sports connected and a sound financial foundation.

The board consists of a chair and six members, elected by the federation meeting. The chair is Anders Holmberg, with Karin Mattsson as vice chair. The federation office at Idrottens Hus is headed by director Patrick Wheeler, with Patrik Bengtsson as federation coordinator.

Over the years

History

Boxing has been an Olympic sport since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games. The Svenska Boxningsförbundet was founded in 1919, 52 years after the Queensberry Rules established the standards of modern boxing. This makes it one of Sweden's older sports federations. Queensberry Rules Sweden has a long tradition of successful boxers, both women and men. Boxers from the SBF national teams have won numerous international medals at European Championships, World Championships, and the Olympic Games. The federation itself has also received awards: in 1988 as the best Olympic federation and in 2009 as the

Sports Federation of the Year Sportbond van het Jaar.

Activities and role

The federation works with the national teams, clubs, youth programs, training courses, and competitions, and has its own program for para-boxing. There is a shared calendar containing all training courses offered by clubs, districts, and the federation itself.

The SBF also manages licenses. A license runs from July 1 through June 30 and requires an annual medical examination during that period. The federation also handles anti-doping activities, provides project support to clubs, and operates its own streaming service. For competition administration, it switched from Boxinghost to Boxerbase, with tablets in each district for digital judging.

Membership and participation

As a national sports federation, SBF is a member of the Swedish Sports Confederation and the Swedish Olympic Committee, and the federation is affiliated with World Boxing and European Boxing. In European Boxing, Sweden is registered as a full member. The federation follows the statutes and regulations of these organisations, works toward a doping-free sport, and strives to ensure equal opportunities for everyone.
