Arena México is located in the Colonia Doctores neighborhood of Mexico City and is owned by wrestling organization CMLL. The venue, built in 1956, has 16,500 seats for wrestling and boxing and is known as the cathedral of lucha libre. The Olympic boxing tournament took place here in 1968.

History

This was originally the site of Arena Modelo, built in the 1910s or 1920s for boxing events and abandoned in the early 1930s. On September 21, 1933, promoter Salvador Lutteroth began organizing lucha libre events there.

When even Arena Coliseo proved too small in 1953, Lutteroth promised to build the largest wrestling arena in the world on the site of Arena Modelo. Arena México was completed there in 1956 and is still the largest venue built specifically for wrestling.

Atmosphere and experience

The venue can accommodate 16,500 spectators in the wrestling and boxing configuration.

Wrestling takes place twice a week: on Tuesdays, CMLL Martes Arena México, and on Fridays, CMLL Super Viernes, the main event recorded for television.

Famous fighters

In 1968, Arena México was the venue for the Olympic boxing tournament at the Mexico City Games.

The venue had regularly hosted boxing galas since its opening and, following its Olympic renovation, hosted several world title fights..

Meaning

Arena México is the headquarters of Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre, as the organization has been called since 1990, and the venue for all its anniversary shows since 1956.
