The arena opened on 17 October 1999 as Staples Center, next to the Los Angeles Convention Center on Figueroa Street. Construction cost 375 million dollars and the design was created by the architectural firm NBBJ.

The venue is owned and operated by Anschutz Entertainment Group and is part of the L.A. Live entertainment district. Between 1999 and 2024, it was the only arena in the NBA shared by two teams.

The building covers 950,000 square feet, stands 45 meters high, and has a floor measuring approximately 29 by 61 meters. Two-thirds of the seats are located in the lower tier, including 2,500 club seats.

Between the lower and upper tiers, there are 160 luxury suites on three levels, including fifteen event suites.

The capacity depends on the configuration: 19,067 for basketball, 18,145 for ice hockey, and around 20,000 for concerts and other sporting events, the configuration that also features a boxing ring in the middle of the floor.

The arena's attendance record dates back to January 25, 2009, when 20,820 spectators attended the fight between WBA welterweight world champion Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley.

At Star Plaza, fourteen statues of famous athletes and commentators from Los Angeles stand in front of the entrance. Among them, since December 1, 2008, has been a statue of boxer Oscar De La Hoya, born in East Los Angeles.

The most attended event in the venue's history was the bout between Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley in 2009.
