Farmasi Arena, formerly known as Jeunesse Arena and HSBC Arena, is a multipurpose venue in Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro. The venue opened in 2007 and has a capacity of 15,430 for sporting events. It is the UFC's permanent Brazilian home venue, having hosted ten events there since 2011.

History

Construction began in November 2005, and the venue was completed in July 2007 for the Pan American Games that year, where basketball and gymnastics took place. The cost was 126 million reais. The owner is the municipality of Rio de Janeiro.

The name changed frequently. As Arena Olímpica do Rio the venue hosted gymnastics during the 2016 Olympic Games and wheelchair basketball during the Paralympic Games. It was then called HSBC Arena from 2008, Jeunesse Arena from 2017 to 2023, and Farmasi Arena since 2024, each time through naming rights.

Building and architecture

The venue features retractable stands all around, allowing dozens of possible configurations for audiences ranging from three hundred to eighteen thousand people.

The facilities meet the technical requirements of the international federations for basketball, gymnastics, volleyball and futsal, and passed the NBA's inspection, after which it held preseason games there for three consecutive years.

Atmosphere and experience

The venue seats 15,430 spectators for sporting events and up to 18,768 for concerts, making it one of the largest indoor arenas in Brazil. The floor area measures 2,400 square metres.

It is operated by GL events, which also manages the nearby Riocentro convention centre and sports complex.

Famous fighters

On 27 August 2011, the UFC returned here to Brazil after thirteen years with UFC 134: Silva vs. Okami. Nine more events followed in the same arena.

Among the best-known are UFC 142: Aldo vs. Mendes in 2012, UFC 153: Silva vs. Bonnar, UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie, UFC 190: Rousey vs. Correia in 2015, UFC 212: Aldo vs. Holloway, UFC 224: Nunes vs. Pennington, UFC 237: Namajunas vs. Andrade, UFC 283: Teixeira vs. Hill, UFC 301: Pantoja vs. Erceg and UFC Fight Night: Oliveira vs. Gamrot in 2025.

Meaning

The arena hosted the country's most important international tournaments: the 2007 Pan American Games, the 2007 World Judo Championships, the 2011 Military World Games, the 2016 Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu-Jitsu and the Rio Olympic Games.

It also hosted NBA games, including the Chicago Bulls versus Washington Wizards in 2013, the 2014 FIBA Intercontinental Cup, and major esports tournaments such as the IEM Rio Major in 2022.

Visitor information

Public transport. The BRT stops at the Parque Olímpico and Rio2 stations. Take line 4 on the metro to Jardim Oceânico, then transfer to the BRT.

Parking. The arena has one thousand parking spaces. Rates are 60 reais for cars, 95 reais for buses and vans, and 25 reais for motorcycles, subject to availability.

Accessibility. Level 1 has 32 wheelchair spaces with assistance from trained staff, and level 3 has 24 wider seats. Four indoor ramps and elevators connect all levels.

Facilities. There are bars on all levels, a medical station, a family restroom, and a changing room.
