GelreDome is a multifunctional stadium in Arnhem, south of the Rhine. Thanks to a retractable roof and a roll-out grass field, the stadium can host both outdoor and indoor events. For football matches, it seats over 21,000 spectators, while concerts can accommodate up to 41,000.

History

The stadium was built between 1996 and 1998 for approximately 95 million euros and opened on 25 March 1998 with the match between Vitesse and NAC Breda, which ended 4-1.

Since its opening, GelreDome has been the home stadium of Vitesse. The first European match followed on 15 September 1998 against AEK Athens in the UEFA Cup.

Building and architecture

The design is by Alynia Architects. The unique sliding-roof construction makes the stadium suitable for covered events in just a few steps.

The playing field measures 105 by 68 metres. The four stands are named after Vitesse icons: Just Göbel, Edward Sturing, Charly Bosveld and Theo Bos.

Atmosphere and experience

Capacity varies greatly depending on the configuration: 21,248 seats for football, 26,600 when it opened, and up to 41,000 for concerts.

This versatility earned the stadium the nickname the largest theater in the Netherlands .

Meaning

GelreDome was a venue during the 2000 European Football Championship, with a capacity of 30,000 seats for that tournament.

The Dutch national team played friendly international matches there, beginning with the Netherlands against Cameroon. Since 2019, the Dutch women's national team has also played in Arnhem.

Parking. There are several visitor parking areas at and around the stadium. A free shuttle service runs from the more distant parking areas; follow the signs and text vehicles on site.

Location. The stadium is located south of the Rhine, on the site where the first pile was driven into a meadow on Batavierenweg in July 1996.
