Lanxess Arena, originally called Kölnarena, is an indoor arena in the Deutz district of Cologne. The arena opened in 1998, has a capacity of 20,000 for concerts, and is home to the ice hockey club Kölner Haie. In 2019, it was the most visited arena in the world.

History

Construction began on 31 July 1996, and the arena opened on 5 October 1998 as Kölnarena. The costs amounted to 153 million euros.

In June 2008, the venue was renamed Lanxess Arena, after the chemical company headquartered nearby in the Lanxess Tower. The agreement was extended in 2017 until the end of 2023 and again in October 2023, until 2028.

Building and architecture

The design is by architect Peter Böhm. The roof is suspended from steel cables beneath a striking arch 76 metres high and weighing 480 tonnes, the landmark of Cologne's skyline on the right bank of the Rhine.

Atmosphere and experience

The venue has 20,000 seats for concerts, 19,500 for handball and 18,500 for ice hockey. In 2019, with 699,924 tickets sold, it was the most visited arena in the world.

In addition to ice hockey, handball and basketball, the venue is known in the esports world as the cathedral, because of the annual Intel Extreme Masters tournament held there since 2015.

Visitor information

Public transport. The Bahnhof Köln Deutz/Messe, Bahnhof Deutz/LANXESS arena and Deutz Technische Hochschule stops are directly next to the arena. Tram lines 1, 3, 4 and 9, bus lines 150, 153, 156, 250 and 260, and S-Bahn lines S6, S11, S12 and S13 stop there, with connections to DB train services. If your ticket bears a VRS logo, it also serves as a transport ticket.

Accessibility. The arena is accessible without steps. From Deutz station, a cycle and pedestrian bridge runs along Opladener Straße to the north entrance; from Justinianstraße, a ramp leads to the southwest entrance. Both have a gradient of less than four percent, and all entrances on the arena plateau are level.

Bicycle. Bicycles and e-scooters may be parked around the arena and on the plateau. There is a Call a Bike station at the arena.

Car. There are several parking facilities: P1, P3 for VIPs, P4, P5 car park and the KölnArcaden car park.
