The O2 Arena

After the Millennium Experience closed at the end of 2000, the Millennium Dome was leased for redevelopment into an entertainment complex, including an indoor arena. Construction ran from 2003 to 2007 and the venue opened on 24 June 2007.

During the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the venue was called North Greenwich Arenabecause Olympic rules do not allow commercial names at competition venues. From 2009 to 2020, the arena hosted the ATP Finals.

The design comes from HOK Sport, now Populous. Because cranes could not be used inside the dome, the arena roof was built on the ground and then hoisted into place, after which the rest of the building was constructed around it.

The arena building occupies 40 percent of the total dome and stands separately from the other buildings in the complex. The venue was deliberately designed to limit reverberation, a common problem in older arenas.

The grandstand layout is fully adjustable, and the floor can also serve different purposes: ice rink, basketball court, exhibition floor, conference hall or concert setup. This allows the venue to be configured around a ring at a scale suited to the fight.

With 20,000 seats The O2 has the third-largest venue capacity in the United Kingdom, after Co-op Live and Manchester Arena.

On 15 October 2022, the bout between Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshalltook place at The O2. It was the first time two female boxers headlined an evening at a major British arena, and it was also the first all-female boxing card in the United Kingdom. Shields won.
