SAP Arena is a multipurpose venue in Mannheim, Germany, opened in 2005 with a capacity of up to 15,000 spectators. The arena is home to ice hockey club Adler Mannheim and handball club Rhein-Neckar Löwen, and hosted a world title fight featuring Wladimir Klitschko four times between 2006 and 2013.

History

Construction began in November 2002, and the arena opened on 2 September 2005. Construction costs amounted to seventy million euros. The owner is Dietmar Hopp; the name comes from sponsor SAP.

In January 2018, the SAP Arena became Germany's first multifunctional venue with indoor positioning, using 630 iBeacons from the German technology company Favendo.

Building and architecture

The design is by the architecture firm Hentrich-Petschnigg & Partner. The hall is considered one of the largest in Germany and, technologically, one of the most advanced in Europe.

Atmosphere and experience

Capacity depends on the setup: 11,000 to 15,000 for concerts, 14,500 for handball, 13,900 for basketball, and 13,600 for ice hockey.

More than one hundred concerts and conferences are held annually, in addition to the regular league matches of both home clubs.

Famous fighters

Heavyweight Wladimir Klitschko Between 2006 and 2013, Wladimir Klitschko won or defended a world title here on four occasions, establishing the venue as a fixture in German heavyweight boxing during those years.

Visitor information

Tram. Tram line 6 connects the SAP Arena with Mannheim city centre.

Car. A dedicated road connection to the B38a links to the A656 towards Heidelberg and to the A6 towards Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Kaiserslautern.
