Construction began on April 6, 1992, and the arena opened on August 18, 1994, at a cost of $175 million. The venue replaced the 1929 Chicago Stadium, which stood across Madison Street and was known as "the madhouse on Madison".

The name comes from sponsor United Airlines. The arena is owned by the Reinsdorf and Wirtz families, the owners of the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks, who operate the building through an equally divided partnership.

The design comes from Populous, then HOK Sport, together with W. E. Simpson Company and Marmon Mok. The exterior was deliberately designed to resemble that of the old Chicago Stadium.

The complex covers 960,000 square feet on a 46-acre site, making it the largest arena in the United States by area. An atrium was added in 2016 and 2017, and Michael Jordan's statue now stands inside it.

Capacity varies by configuration: 20,917 for basketball, 19,717 for ice hockey, and up to 23,500 for concerts, the configuration also used for combat sports events.

The attendance record stands at 22,819 spectators, recorded on February 15, 1997. The venue hosts more than two hundred events annually.

On January 28, 2012, the UFC held its first nationally televised event in the arena: UFC on Fox: Evans vs. Davis, in which former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans defeated Phil Davis by decision.
