Forest National, known as Vorst Nationaal in Dutch, is a concert venue in the Brussels municipality of Forest. The venue opened in 1970, seats over eight thousand spectators, and is considered one of the best-known and best-equipped venues in Belgium, hosting an average of 130 shows per year.

History

The venue was built because concerts had become too large for the existing venues in Brussels, and it was completed on 8 October 1970.

Plans for a new venue with 12,000 to 15,000 seats near Drogenbos were 2008 scrapped by owner Music Hall Group. A later move to the Heysel also fell through; since 2013, be•at has operated the venue while Music Hall Group remains its owner.

Building and architecture

During the renovation of 1995 the capacity was increased, and the lighting and sound systems were upgraded.

In 2014, a second round followed: the seats were numbered, and new foyers were added, including one in an old backstage area.

Atmosphere and experience

In that old backstage area, a Wall of Famewas created, where artists wrote personal messages. The wall is accessible to the public.

Meaning

From 1981 to 1992, the venue hosted the Donnay Indoor Championships and, since the 2014-2015 season, the Belgian basketball cup. Until 2008, it was home to the ice hockey club Brussels Royal IHSC.

During the Davis Cup semi-final against Argentina in September 2015, a total of 17,000 spectatorsattended, a Belgian attendance record for the competition.
