Yokohama Arena

The arena opened on 1 April 1989 with an opening concert by Japanese singer Yumi Matsutoya. The owner is Yokohama Arena Corp.

The building underwent two renovations, in 2016 and 2022. Following the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, the venue served as an emergency shelter for those affected, who could stay there overnight.

The venue was built by Takenaka Corporation and is modeled in its layout on Madison Square Garden in New York.

The arena uses the computer-controlled Lambda system for movable stands, allowing the venue to be configured differently for each event.

The capacity is 17,000 seats, and 13,083 in basketball configuration. The spacious stage area allows for complex setups, while the venue remains compact enough to sell out faster than the Tokyo Dome.

The venue is one of the largest concert venues in the Kanto region and regularly achieves an occupancy rate of over ninety percent.

Yokohama Arena hosted numerous events by Pride Fighting Championships and in 2008 was the venue for the final of the K-1 World Grand Prix.

In boxing, the quarterfinal of the World Boxing Super Series took place here on October 7, 2018, between Naoya Inoue and Juan Carlos Payano.

In Japan, the venue is so closely intertwined with martial arts that it also appears in popular culture: Yokohama Arena is one of the locations in the manga and anime series Hajime no Ippo.
