About this city

From boxing tradition to MMA and grappling: Aalborg's martial arts scene brings together clubs with a long history and specialized training environments. At Nordkraft, several disciplines come together under one roof; elsewhere in the city, MMA, BJJ and thai boxing have their own schools.

The Limfjord gives the regional story a second shore. Lindholm Boxing Club is located in Nørresundby, not in Aalborg itself, but with its history and the Viking Box Cup, it forms part of the broader North Jutland boxing landscape.

Overview

A landscape of diverse club profiles. Aalborg Martial Arts combines striking, MMA and grappling within a broad-based association. neoGYM focuses on the connection between stand-up fighting, wrestling and submissions. Aalborg Selvforsvar & Ju-jitsu Club offers both traditional Ju-Jitsu and BJJ, while Aalborg Muay Thai emphasizes thai boxing and physical preparation.

Sport in a changing city. The former industrial site of Nordkraft has taken on a new role as a cultural and sports complex. Aalborg Martial Arts' location on the fifth floor connects this urban renewal with everyday club life. Alongside this central location, individual clubs elsewhere in Aalborg continue to develop their own training approaches.

Geography and character

Nordkraft: industrial heritage with a sporting function. Aalborg Martial Arts uses the fifth floor of the former power station. The combination of culture and sport at Nordkraft makes this training location a distinctive part of the urban redevelopment.

Multiple locations, individual training profiles. Øster Sundby Vej, Skydebanevej and Porsvej are other addresses in the local martial arts landscape. neoGYM, Aalborg Selvforsvar & Ju-jitsu Club and Team Dedicated AMT each give their training environment its own character, alongside Nordkraft's broad offering.

Two banks of the Limfjord. Aalborg and Nørresundby lie on opposite sides of the water. Lindholm Bokseklub is geographically part of Nørresundby. Both banks are relevant to the regional martial arts story, but this distinction is retained for club addresses and city associations.

Club affiliations and specializations. The character of the offering is particularly evident in the different clubs and training paths: broad introductions, technical development, physical preparation and competition training. Nordkraft's industrial setting and the older club traditions give this offering a local history.

History

1931: The regional boxing tradition. Lindholm Boxing Club was founded in 1931 in Nørresundby, on the northern side of the Limfjord. The club remains a lasting link to the boxing history of the Aalborg region. The Viking Box Cup connects this local association with international amateur boxing.

1974: Ju-Jitsu and self-defense. Aalborg Selvforsvar & Ju-jitsu Club began in 1974 with traditional Japanese Ju-Jitsu and self-defense. As it developed, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu also found a place. The club's history shows how a traditional association could expand its offerings with another form of ground fighting.

Nordkraft as a new sporting environment. In 2009, the former coal-fired power plant Nordkraft was repurposed as a cultural and sports complex. Aalborg Martial Arts moved to the fifth floor. The industrial building thus also became a setting for martial arts training, from youth groups and recreational classes to competition preparation.

Specialization in MMA and no-gi. The development of MMA and grappling added new training pathways. At neoGYM, striking, wrestling, and submissions come together in an integrated MMA approach. Alongside the older boxing and Ju-Jitsu traditions, this created room for training in which different aspects of combat are treated as a unified whole.

Martial arts landscape

Aalborg Martial Arts is located at Teglgårds Plads 1, on the fifth floor of Nordkraft. Kickboxing, Muay Thai, boxing, MMA and grappling make up the technical offering; Kick’n’Burn provides a fitness-focused option. Head coach Delwar Mizori is associated with the competition-focused side of the club.

neoGYM at Øster Sundby Vej 19 focuses on MMA, submission wrestling, no-gi grappling and BJJ. Under the guidance of Claus Mandal, striking, wrestling and ground work are brought together. The application of grappling within MMA, including the presence of ground strikes, is an important distinction from purely sport-oriented ground fighting.

Aalborg Self-Defense & Ju-Jitsu Club at Skydebanevej 1 combines traditional Ju-Jitsu, self-defense and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with a gi. Technical development and structured training form the core of this option within the local offering.

Aalborg Muay Thai / Team Dedicated AMT at Porsvej 3 focuses on Muay Thai, K-1 and boxing. Jones Anissi is associated with the club as a coach. Thai boxing technique and physical conditioning are central to the preparation.

Lindholm Boxing Club in Nørresundby is located at Lerumbakken 11, on the other side of the Limfjord. The club represents the region's classic boxing tradition and is associated with organizing the Viking Box Cup.
