About this city

Albertslund is located on the western side of Copenhagen, in Vestegnen. It is a suburb where the sporting environment is closely intertwined with daily life: clubs, sports complexes and independent gyms offer places to train over the long term. Within martial arts, this takes two different forms. Mikenta brings muay thai, MMA, BJJ and boxing together, while Albertslund Taekwondo Klub represents its own club culture centred around the Korean martial art.

The distinction lies not only in the sports, but also in how people develop within a club. A broad gym provides space to practise different disciplines alongside one another; a taekwondo club brings together age groups, gradings, sparring and forms within a single tradition. Recreational participation and competitive ambitions in Albertslund therefore do not exist separately, but within the same local sporting environment.

Overview

Albertslund brings together different martial arts cultures. At Mikenta, muay thai, boxing, MMA and BJJ come together in one gym. Albertslund Taekwondo Klub offers a different environment: a club where children's training, gradings, sparring and patterns are all part of the same Korean martial art.

Daily club life connects these different disciplines. Beginners learn their first techniques, recreationalists build a regular training routine and competitive athletes work on their preparation. The training sessions bring people with different ambitions together, even when they do not choose the same competition path.

In the surrounding Vestegnen there are other sports clubs and gyms, including BADR Fight Club in Taastrup. Together with the offerings in Copenhagen and Brøndby, this forms the broader sporting environment around Albertslund.

Geography and character

Albertslund is located in Vestegnen, on the western side of Copenhagen. Nearby places such as Brøndby and Taastrup connect the town to a broad suburban area. Residential neighborhoods, sports facilities, and green spaces together shape the character of Albertslund.

Vestskoven and Herstedhøje give the area an open and green character. The forest and hills lie next to the urban world of roads, residential neighborhoods, and indoor sports facilities. This combination of city and landscape is characteristic of the area in which Albertslund's clubs operate.

History

Mikenta was founded in 1989 by Brian Talarek, Michael Nielsen, and Kenneth Lind. The club grew into a regular training venue in Albertslund, where recreational athletes and competitive fighters train side by side. Talarek remained connected to the gym for many years and eventually became its sole owner.

Mikkel Lund's five Danish titles between 2007 and 2011 gave the local development of Muay Thai a concrete face. As a Mikenta fighter, he won five consecutive national championships. He later moved into professional MMA, without losing his connection to the gym in Albertslund.

The ring also found a place on the cultural stage. Brian Talarek's Mikenta Fight Night was announced for September 10, 2022, at MusikTeatret Albertslund. The card combined up-and-coming and experienced fighters with national title bouts and a European WBC Muay Thai title fight for participants under eighteen.

A new division of responsibilities in 2026 brought Simon Talarek and Mikkel Lund together in the day-to-day management of Mikenta. Brian remained the owner and involved in the development of the fighters. This gave two people who had grown up with the club themselves responsibility for the next phase of its existence.

Martial arts landscape

At Mikenta, the variety lies within the gym. Muay thai and boxing emphasize stand-up fighting, BJJ focuses on ground work, and MMA on the connection between different disciplines. The shared training center thus offers different entry points into martial arts, without requiring every participant to choose the same discipline or competitive ambitions.

At Albertslund Taekwondo Klub, the variety lies within the tradition. Kyorugi, the sparring discipline, and poomsae, the forms, each require a different execution and competition preparation. Children’s classes and training for more advanced practitioners are part of the same club organization.

The two settings complement the cityscape. They show that the local martial arts culture cannot be reduced to solely professional competitions or solely traditional practice. Daily classes form the foundation; the ring, competition mat, and specialized groups provide different paths forward from there.
