Ballerup

Ballerup combines a long boxing tradition with a pioneering role in the spread of taekwondo across Zealand. From the first training sessions at Måløvhallen, Hwa-Rang grew into a meeting place for practitioners from various municipalities. At Tapeten, this history, KVIK’s boxing, and the wrestling and weightlifting of Atletklubben DAN come together in a vibrant club community.

About this city

Ballerup has a martial arts history that extends beyond the municipal boundaries. KVIK builds on a boxing tradition dating back to 1954, while the taekwondo club founded in 1974 became a starting point for new clubs across Zealand. That pioneering spirit lives on at Ballerup Martial Arts Center, where the Hwa-Rang tradition is combined with Wing Tzun and comprehensive youth training.

Overview

Ballerup's martial arts community is supported by clubs with stories of their own. At Bokseklubben KVIK, competitive ambitions and recreational boxing training coexist. Ballerup Kampsport Center connects the Hwa-Rang tradition with other martial arts. Atletklubben DAN brings wrestling and weightlifting together. The clubs therefore offer different paths to technical development, physical training and competition, without every member needing to have the same sporting ambitions.

Tapeten at Magleparken is a recognizable hub. KVIK trains there, and both Kampsport Center and AK DAN have Magleparken 5 as their address. The wider sporting environment of Ballerup Idrætsby connects the clubs with other sports and facilities. Alongside larger events, it is the recurring classes and daily club interaction that shape the local martial arts culture.

Geography and character

Magleparken and Tapeten are a tangible meeting place for local clubs. KVIK's boxing training and the addresses of Kampsport Center and AK DAN come together at Magleparken 5. This concentration brings different sporting traditions close together, from boxing and taekwondo to wrestling and weightlifting.

Ballerup Super Arena gives the sporting environment a larger scale. The arena, built in 2001 at Ballerup Idrætsby 4, combines an indoor cycling track with a flexibly arranged indoor floor, stands, and meeting rooms. Ballerup Municipality took over the site in 2004. The arena supports track cycling and local sporting activities as well as larger events, trade fairs, and gatherings.

The early history of taekwondo connects Ballerup with the surrounding municipalities. The first official club training took place in Måløv; expansion later reached Skovlunde, Herlev, Ølstykke, and Albertslund. Ballerup thus became not only a new training venue but also a meeting point where knowledge and practitioners from different municipalities came together.

History

KVIK was founded on 11 February 1954. Boxing thereby gained its own association in Ballerup. The club statutes mention expert guidance and the DaBU regulations alongside responsibility for the social life within the association. Boxing is both a sporting activity and a shared club life there.

In 1974, Zealand got its first taekwondo club. Palle Petersen founded Ballerup Taekwondo Klub with Niels Viborg and Otto Christensen. Petersen had a background in judo and began training in taekwondo with Gunnar Sørensen in 1973. After an initial period of practicing with friends, the first official club training session took place on 2 September 1974 in the fitness room at Måløvhallen.

The collaboration with Shin Boo Young from 1975 gave the club a regional profile. The Germany-based master became an important technical influence. Practitioners from other clubs came to Ballerup, and branches were established in Ølstykke, Skovlunde, Herlev, and Albertslund. The association initially continued as Copenhagen Taekwondo Club. In 1976, Shin Boo Young gave it the name Hwa-Rang, after which Ballerup became a center of Hwa-Rang Denmark.

International participation followed at an early stage. Four club members took part in the 1977 World Championships in Chicago. In 1978, the association acquired its own premises at Tapeten. Laila Jensen won a European title in 1980; other Ballerup practitioners won silver and bronze during the same championship period. In this way, the club brought a young local sporting tradition to an international stage.

Later, the technical competition branch also grew. After Claus D. Thomsen and Rasmus Petersen took over the leadership in 1995, the club entered a new phase of development. Claus D. Thomsen and Peter H. Kristensen won European technical titles in 2001 and repeated their success with the synchronized team in 2003. Randi West Hansen and Trine B. Jørgensen were also among the practitioners who connected Ballerup with national technical and demonstration teams.

Ballerup Kampsport Center emerged through a gradual broadening. Copenhagen Nunchaku was founded in 2007 and Ballerup Wing Tzun in 2013. From 2016 onward, the youngest children were offered an all-round program. In 2019, the umbrella association was named Ballerup Kampsport Center. The original taekwondo club continued to exist as part of it, with Hwa-Rang remaining a lasting connection to its history.

Martial arts landscape

Ballerup Martial Arts Center combines taekwondo with Wing Tzun and all-round youth training. The taekwondo tradition includes both competitive fighting and technical forms and team events. The children's program combines taekwondo kicks with selected Wing Tzun techniques, falling skills, and ground work based on Brazilian jiu-jitsu. These elements form one comprehensive youth training program alongside the focused classes for older practitioners.

KVIK offers several ways to get into boxing. The youth team focuses on young boxers, the competition team prepares members for bouts, and recreational boxing offers recreational boxing training. The club emphasizes control and safety. A boxer is only given a bout when the trainers consider their fitness and boxing technique level sufficient.

Athletic Club DAN adds wrestling and weightlifting. Founded on June 1, 1895, the association has a long history and welcomes recreationalists and competitive athletes. Based at Tapeten, its two sports departments retain separate training programs within the same club community.
