Bemmel

Bemmel is a village in the Dutch municipality of Lingewaard, in the Betuwe region between Arnhem and Nijmegen. Martial arts are particularly visible there through Bemmel Boxing Club, a recognized boxing center affiliated with the Dutch Boxing Association that won the Best Social Initiative Award at the Dutch Fitness Awards in 2022.

About this city

Bemmel is a village in the municipality of Lingewaard in the province of Gelderland, located in the Betuwe between Arnhem and Nijmegen. In 2026, the village had 12,290 inhabitants. Bemmel was an independent municipality until it merged with Huissen and Gendt in 2001; the new municipality has been called Lingewaard since 2003.
Boksclub Bemmel, located on De Kazematten, is a recognized boxing center of the Dutch Boxing Federation and carries the NIVM Safe & Responsible Martial Arts label. The club focuses on recreational sport for young people from around the age of eleven, women, and adults, without hard sparring or competition training.

In 2022, the club won first prize for Best Social Initiative at the Dutch Fitness Awards. According to its own website, the club supports people who are mentally or physically struggling through boxing and self-defense training, in cooperation with, among others, the municipality.

Betuwe village between two cities

Bemmel is located in the Betuwe between Arnhem and Nijmegen, in the catchment area of the Waal and Linge rivers. Of its 15.89 km², 159 hectares are water. According to AlleCijfers, 75 percent of the 5,277 homes are owner-occupied; basketball club Yoast United plays in the highest Dutch league.

History

From municipality to Lingewaard

The Protestant church of Bemmel dates from the twelfth century. In 2001, the municipality of Bemmel merged with Huissen and Gendt; the new municipality was named 2003 Lingewaard. Between 1990 and 2006, the village was expanded with the residential neighborhoods of Klaverkamp, Klein Rome, and Essenpas.

Martial arts landscape

Bemmel Boxing Club

Bemmel Boxing Club trains at De Kazematten and offers youth boxing for ages 11 to 15, boxing training for women, and evening and Saturday training sessions for adults. The focus is on technique and fitness, without physical contact. No other martial arts clubs with a confirmed location in Bemmel were found in this research.
