History

The reclamation of the area began in the early twelfth century. The Bishop of Utrecht allocated land for reclamation, including to Benno van Aemstel. The name Benschop refers to his reclamation area, known as a cope.

The history of Snellenburg includes a medieval castle, which was destroyed in 1534, and a country estate established later. The Grote or Sint-Nicolaaskerk, which originated in the thirteenth century, is also part of the village's historical heritage.

Benschop was part of the Barony of IJsselstein and became part of the province of Utrecht in 1814. The independent municipality was incorporated into the municipality of Lopik during the 1989 municipal reorganization.

During the Second World War, the village provided shelter to people in hiding. After a German invasion in February 1945, seven arrested men were executed by firing squad on 17 February. These events constitute a painful part of local history.

Writer Herman de Man spent part of his youth in Benschop and Polsbroekerdam. The Lopikerwaard and Krimpenerwaard play an important role in his work. His former home on Dorpsplein is known as the Herman de Man House.
