History

Bergambacht was formerly also called ’s Heeraartsberg and Bergambacht. Until 1909, the village was home to ’s Heeraartsberg Castle, to which this historical name refers.

In the municipal reorganization of 1 January 1985, Ammerstol and Berkenwoude were added to the municipality of Bergambacht. As a result, the municipality encompassed several villages and hamlets.

On 1 January 2015, Bergambacht merged with Nederlek, Ouderkerk, Schoonhoven and Vlist to form the municipality of Krimpenerwaard. This merger followed cooperation between the five municipalities within the K5 partnership.
