Bunnik is a municipality in the province of Utrecht, with the villages of Bunnik, Odijk and Werkhoven and over 16,000 inhabitants. Martial arts are small-scale but present: Enoch Martial Arts has been teaching taekwondo and hapkido since 2005, and on Dorpsstraat, Gracie Barra Utrecht trains in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Bunnik is a municipality in the province of Utrecht, comprising the towns of Bunnik, Odijk, and Werkhoven. On January 1, 2026, the municipality had 16,402 residents across 37.57 km²; Bunnik itself had 7,459 residents.
Its history goes back almost 2,000 years: the Romans built the Fectio fort near present-day Vechten, with a harbor on the Rhine. In the 8th and 9th centuries, the villages of Bunninchem, Lodichem, and Wercundia emerged, the forerunners of Bunnik, Odijk, and Werkhoven.

The martial arts offering is modest. Founded in 2005, Enoch Martial Arts offers taekwondo and hapkido on Tuesday and Friday evenings at the Irenezaal in Bunnik and states that it is affiliated with the Taekwondo Bond Nederland and the Nederlandse Hapkido Bond. Gracie Barra Utrecht is located at Dorpsstraat 27 in Bunnik and offers classes in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, no-gi grappling, and a women’s class.

Three settlements along the Kromme Rijn

The municipality of Bunnik consists of the settlements Bunnik, Odijk and Werkhoven and had 16,402 inhabitants on 1 January 2026. The municipality covers 37.57 km², of which 0.64 km² is water. The undulating white band on the municipal flag refers to the Kromme Rijn.

Between Utrecht and the Kromme Rijn region

Bunnik is located in the province of Utrecht; the wavy stripe on the municipal flag refers to the Kromme Rijn. The village of Bunnik covers 13.61 km² and had 7,459 inhabitants in 2026, an increase of 12 percent since 2013. With 441 inhabitants per km², the municipality is less densely populated than the Dutch average of 536.

History

From Fectio to Bunninchem

The written history of Bunnik began almost 2,000 years ago, when the Romans built the fort Fectio near present-day Vechten, with a harbor on the Rhine at the border of the empire. The fort remained a trading post even after the Romans left in the fourth century. In the 8th and 9th centuries, the villages of Bunninchem, Lodichem, and Wercundia emerged, later becoming Bunnik, Odijk, and Werkhoven.

Coat of arms and flag

The first municipal coat of arms, from 1913, showed a red rooster on gold, derived from the coat of arms of the Lordship of Amelisweerd. The current quartered coat of arms dates from 1969. The municipal flag was awarded on 15 August 1974 .

Enoch Martial Arts was founded in 2005 and offers taekwondo and hapkido, Korean martial arts, on Tuesday and Friday evenings at the Irenezaal in Bunnik. According to the club's website, instructor Willem Enoch attained fourth dan in hapkido. Gracie Barra Utrecht, located at Dorpsstraat 27 in Bunnik, offers classes for all levels in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, no-gi grappling, and a women-only class.
