Bussum is a town in the province of North Holland and has been part of the municipality of Gooise Meren since 2016, together with Naarden, Muiden, and Muiderberg. On January 1, 2026, the town had 33,638 residents across 8.14 km².
Bussum was first mentioned in 1306 and remained under Naarden’s administration until 1817. The arrival of the railway in 1874 turned it into a commuter town for Amsterdam. Between 1898 and 1907, it was home to the Netherlands’ first socialist colony, founded by Frederik van Eeden, and in 1951, the first Dutch television broadcast was transmitted from Bussum.

In martial arts, Judoschool van der Hoek is the best-known name, with training locations including Struikheiweg and Dr. Schaepmanlaan. In 2020, brothers Christiaan and Sander van der Hoek made NH Nieuws with a handmade judo dummy. The Kickboxing Society also provides group kickboxing training on Nieuwe Spiegelstraat.

History

From heath farms to commuter town

Bussum is first mentioned in 1306 and for a long time consisted of heathland with small farms. From 1369, it was part of Naarden; in 1817, Bussum became independent. After the railway arrived in 1874, it grew into a commuter town near Amsterdam, and in 1951, the first Dutch television broadcast was produced here.

Judo dummy during the coronavirus pandemic

When judo had to be practiced without an opponent in 2020 due to the coronavirus measures, Bussum brothers Christiaan and Sander van der Hoek sewed a life-size judo dummy from a judo suit. According to NH Nieuws, judo schools in the Netherlands, as well as schools from Spain and the Irish Judo Federation, showed interest.
