History

From lordship to county

The oldest known mention of the name is Culenburgh, dating from 1281. In 1318 Culemborg was granted city rights by Lord Jan van Beusichem. Shortly before the death of Elisabeth of Culemborg on 9 December 1555, Emperor Charles V elevated the lordship to a county.

To Gelderland

In 1720, Duke Ernst Frederik sold the county to the States of the Nijmegen Quarter, who donated it in 1748 to Stadholder William IV. The Batavian Republic brought an end to the county in 1798. Culemborg is also the birthplace of Jan van Riebeeck (1619–1677), the founder of Cape Town.
