Frederiksberg

Frederiksberg is an independent city within Copenhagen, known for its green gardens, parks, and cultural venues. Behind its peaceful streets lies a martial arts community where youth training, years of practicing together, and professional boxing evenings each have their place.
Sport and culture have long shared the same halls here. From the boxing history of K.B. Hallen to daily training in local dojos, the story is about people coming together: to learn, stay active, or experience a fight in the ring.

About this city

Those who know Frederiksberg for its palace gardens and parks see only part of the area. The independent municipality lies in the middle of Copenhagen's urban area, but has its own community life. Alongside the places where people go for walks, go out, or attend a performance, there are halls where they train together every week. Martial arts are part of that everyday urban routine.

Between ordinary training evenings and the boxing ring lies Frederiksberg's own martial arts story. Children take their first steps on the mat, adults make practice part of their week, and in the larger halls the sport becomes a public event. The clubs and athletes give these different aspects a face, from partner training without competition to professional boxing in front of an audience.

Overview

Behind Frederiksberg’s green and cultural image lies a day-to-day sporting environment. The palace gardens and parks give the municipality distinctive outdoor spaces; in the sports halls, different forms of connection emerge. There, people learn not only a technique but also develop a rhythm: returning, working together, and gradually becoming more capable.

This everyday training practice exists alongside the highly visible competition night. Where a boxing gala brings the audience together around the ring, a youth class or partner training brings people together on the mat. The contrast between these two scales is part of Frederiksberg, an independent municipality that is nevertheless located in the heart of a larger capital.

Geography and character

Frederiksberg has its own identity without being separate from Copenhagen. The green gardens, squares, and cultural venues make it a distinctive area within the same urban region. This combination is also visible in sports: a club with København in its name can quite simply have its regular training location in Frederiksberg.

The martial arts character emerges in the places where people actually meet. A youth class on Bernhard Bangs Allé, partner training on Bülowsvej, and a boxing evening on Jens Jessens Vej are different experiences in the same municipality. Together, they provide a more concrete picture of the area than one assumed type of athlete or a single lifestyle.

History

The history of the large venues shows how sport and culture grew alongside each other here. K.B. Hallen opened in 1938 and welcomed athletes as well as musicians, including boxers. The fire on September 28, 2011, brought an end to the original building. The inauguration of the new hall on December 5, 2018, gave the venue a renewed role for sporting and cultural events.

Professional boxing added its own chapter at Frederiksberghallerne. Danish Fight Night, founded by Mogens and Bettina Palle in December 2015, organized boxing galas there. Bettina continued the promotion after Mogens' death in 2022. Thus, the history of a local venue intersects with a family story that holds a much larger place in the Danish boxing world.

Martial arts landscape

Not everyone who trains in Frederiksberg is looking for the same kind of progress. A child may start with games and simple techniques, while an adult may enjoy learning to move more precisely. At København ITF Taekwon-Do Klub, there is room for different levels within the same club. The aikido training at Bülowsvejhallen shows another side: a physically demanding martial art in which cooperation and development without competition are central.

For the boxing audience, the focus is instead on fighting in the ring. Danish Fight Night's galas bring professional boxers to Frederiksberghallerne. Hamza Hussein's appearance and the announced professional debut night of Lucas Ashira illustrate how the venue also serves as a meeting point between up-and-coming boxers and the public.
