About this city

Coast, residential areas and reuse give Hellerup its own urban story. The district in Gentofte lies directly north of Copenhagen. Strandvejen connects different building periods, while the roads to the Øresund run alongside villa developments.

At the harbor that history can also be found in sport. The former Palladium film studios are used by associations, including Hellerup Fægte-Klub. Elsewhere on Strandvejen, a personal training studio offers a different scale of guidance. Both forms are part of the local sports environment, without presupposing the same audience or ambitions.

Overview

A district with multiple historical layers stretches along Strandvejen, from Tuborg toward Charlottenlund Forest. The apartments along this route are among Copenhagen’s oldest suburban buildings. Villas dating from around 1900, the Øregaard manor house, and the functionalist residential blocks of Blidah Park show different stages of development.

Sport within existing buildings adds another layer of its own. At Palladium, a former film studio has become part of community life at the harbor. Training by Harold uses a private studio at Strandvejen 70 for personal martial arts and fitness training.

Geography and character

Øresund and Strandvejen are defining lines in Hellerup’s urban landscape. Residential streets face the coast; the main thoroughfare connects historic country houses, villas, and apartment buildings. Hellerup’s proximity to Copenhagen makes it part of a continuous urban area.

The sporting character takes shape here on different scales. An old cinema carries on a long-standing screen tradition, while a smaller studio provides space for personal martial arts training. The distinctive buildings and the people who teach there bring that story to life.

History

Palladium and the harbor connect Hellerup with Danish film history. The production company began in 1919 in existing film studios and expanded the studios in 1938. The studios in Hellerup closed in 1971. The complex subsequently took on a different role in the local sports and association community.

Hellerup Fencing Club was founded in 1944. The club uses the former film loft as a fencing hall, with built-in pistes. Its history also includes international achievements, including Patrick Jørgensen’s individual World Championship bronze medal in 2015 and the Danish épée fencers’ European team silver medal in 2019. The team’s four members were affiliated with HFK.

Martial arts landscape

Training by Harold brings boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, kung fu, and tai chi together in a studio at Strandvejen 70. Harold Clark provides personal coaching by appointment, alongside small private groups and corporate training. Strength and conditioning work supports the martial arts offering.

The fencing tradition also forms an important part of Hellerup’s broader sporting history. At HFK, youth training, recreational fencing, and elite coaching exist within the same association. That story belongs to the neighborhood, alongside the unarmed martial arts practiced in the private studio.
