Hvidovre

Hvidovre is a residential and working municipality directly west of Copenhagen. Residential neighborhoods, the Avedøre Holme business area, Hvidovre Hospital, and Filmbyen give different parts of the suburb their own character. S-trains and motorways connect the area to the rest of the capital.
Boxing, karate, and taekwondo are part of local community life. At the Simjang Ilyeo taekwondo club, playful training for children, technical development, and competition-oriented forms coexist.

About this city

Hvidovre is part of Copenhagen’s continuous urban landscape, but as an independent municipality it has a distinctive local life. Residential neighborhoods and shopping streets stand alongside large employment areas, educational facilities, and sports venues.

Avedøre Holme, Hvidovre Hospital, and Filmbyen show how diverse the suburb is: industry and energy infrastructure, healthcare, and film production come together within the same municipality. Local sports clubs add places for socializing, training, and development.

Overview

Living and working on the western side of Copenhagen shape Hvidovre's everyday character. Shops are concentrated along Hvidovrevej and Gammel Køge Landevej, among other places, and around the Friheden and Hvidovre C centers.

Local community life offers various ways to take part in sports. Hvidovre Boxing Club, Hvidovre Karate Club, and Hvidovre Taekwondo Club are examples of this offering, alongside the municipality's broader sports facilities.

Geography and character

Between the capital and the coast Hvidovre lies directly west of Copenhagen. The municipality has a coastline along the Øresund, including the reclaimed Avedøre Holme. Buildings and infrastructure cover a large part of the area.

S-trains and motorways connect residential neighborhoods, businesses, and the rest of the capital. Hvidovre's proximity to Copenhagen makes it part of a larger urban network, while local clubs and sports centers provide their own meeting places.

History

The growth into a suburb is evident in Hvidovre’s development during the twentieth century. Between 1950 and 1980, the municipality’s population approximately doubled. Housing construction, infrastructure and employment areas made Hvidovre an increasingly integral part of the metropolitan landscape.

Avedøre Holme developed into the most important business area, on reclaimed land along the coast. Another spatial layer is Avedørelejren, where Filmbyen became home to film and media companies.

In the 2007 municipal reform Hvidovre remained independent. The municipality thus combines its own administration and local services with close ties to Copenhagen.

Martial arts landscape

Boxing, karate and taekwondo give the local martial arts scene distinct accents. Hvidovre Boxing Club represents boxing, while Hvidovre Karate Club represents the karate offering. Hvidovre Taekwondo Club uses the name Simjang Ilyeo.

Simjang Ilyeo combines training for children and adults with a separate techniques group preparing for competitions. The club trains at Avedøre Sports Center. The program distinguishes between age and experience rather than using one training path for everyone.
