About this city

Jyllinge grew from a fishing village into a residential community on Roskilde Fjord. The old center lies sheltered behind Lilleø and Jyllinge Holme; around it, residential neighborhoods emerged, giving the village a different scale.

Harbor, church, and community life give Jyllinge several meeting places. Along the waterfront, the past remains visible, while Jyllingehallerne and the local sports clubs provide space for daily training and shared activities.

Overview

A town on the fjord is Jyllinge in the municipality of Roskilde on Zealand. The old village center is surrounded by residential areas, including Nordmark, which was previously an area of summer houses. A smaller industrial area lies east of the town.

Jyllinge Sports Halls brings sports and culture together. The complex provides space for clubs and schools, as well as larger tournaments and sports demonstrations. Alongside the harbor and the old center, it is another important place in local life.

Geography and character

Roskilde Fjord defines the landscape along the western side of Jyllinge. The old centre lies by a former coastal slope approximately ten metres high, overlooking Lilleø and Jyllinge Holme. The harbour connects the built-up area directly with the water.

Old centre and newer residential neighbourhoods show different stages of development side by side. The proximity of Roskilde and Copenhagen places Jyllinge within a larger regional network, without obscuring its own village history and location on the fjord.

History

Jyllinge is mentioned in 1171 under the name Iuleghe. The town retained a mixed character of village and fishing settlement until the 1930s.

The twelfth-century church forms a tangible link with the Middle Ages. The Romanesque nave, choir, and apse were built from fieldstones; the tower and porches were added later, during the Gothic period.

Expansion with residential neighborhoods changed the size of Jyllinge. Large neighborhoods with detached houses grew around the old center, while the former summer-house area of Nordmark also became part of the town. Its location on the fjord and proximity to Roskilde and Copenhagen contributed to this growth.

In addition to athletic development, the club emphasizes social interaction during training sessions and trips to competitions.

JGI Jiu-Jitsu offers classes for children and adults. Self-defense is central, with techniques at a distance, from standing grips, and on the ground. The local offering is complemented by Jyllinge Martial Arts with kickboxing and Krav Maga.
