Løgstør

Løgstør is located on the Limfjord in Vesthimmerland, between Løgstør Bredning and Aggersund. The town grew from a fishing settlement into a port and trading town. Frederik VII’s Canal and the old coastal slope still make that development recognizable in the landscape.
The nickname Muslingebyen, the Mussel Town, connects Løgstør with the shellfish of the fjord. As part of the local sports scene, Løgstør Gym og Fit offers boxing, among other activities, alongside gymnastics and other fitness activities.

About this city

Løgstør arose around fishing and shipping on the Limfjord. The water determined both the work of the inhabitants and the development of the harbor. When conditions for herring fishing changed, trade and transport took on a greater role.

The Mussel Town is the name the town uses to emphasize its connection with the fjord and mussels. The harbor, canal, and residential neighborhoods above the old coastal slope reveal different periods of Løgstør’s history.

Overview

A port city in Vesthimmerland is located here along the connection between Løgstør Bredning and Aggersund. In addition to its historic role as a port, Løgstør developed trade and industry, including woodworking and metalworking.

From a working port to recreational use the role of the port changed. Pleasure boats and the delivery of mussels are part of the harbour scene that links the city to its nickname, Mussel City. The built-up area expanded southwards with residential neighbourhoods.

Geography and character

Limfjord, Løgstør Bredning and Aggersund define the geographical surroundings. Løgstør is located in Vesthimmerland Municipality in North Jutland, approximately forty kilometers west of Aalborg.

The old coastal slope marks the transition between the historic harbor area and later development. The town's distinctive character comes from the water, its maritime history and the canal, alongside the residential and working areas that emerged later.

History

A fishing settlement around 1500 marked the beginning of Løgstør along the waterway. After the Limfjord gained an opening to the west in 1825, herring fishing lost its former basis, and trade and shipping became more important.

Frederik VII’s Canal, opened in 1861 changed the passage along Løgstør Grunde. The local company that helped ships navigate the shallows consequently lost its purpose. The history of the canal thus also tells of changing work on the fjord.

Formal town privileges in 1900 followed earlier trading rights resembling those of a market town. At the beginning of the twentieth century, development expanded above the old coastal slope. The Neo-Gothic Løgstør Church had already been consecrated in 1893.
