Geography and character

Blerick

Blerick is situated on the western bank of the Meuse, opposite Venlo, between the A73 and A67. The Meuse, railway lines, and connections to Venlo form important structures in the area. Hout-Blerick and Boekend are part of the same district.

The area combines residential neighborhoods and historic centers with the Trade Ports business parks. The former barracks site and the remains of Fort Sint-Michiel refer to its military history. Sur Meuse aan de Helling, built in 1705, is part of Blerick's historic heritage.

History

Blerick

The name Blerick is associated with Blariaco, a settlement name on the Roman Peutinger Map. The historic parish consisted of three residential areas: the village of Blerick, Hout-Blerick and Boekend.

Blerick belonged to the Upper Quarter of Guelders and came under Prussian rule during the War of the Spanish Succession. Following the French occupation from 1794 onward, Blerick, Baarlo and Bree were administratively merged. In 1818, the municipality was given the name Maasbree.

The Venlo-Eindhoven railway line opened in 1865, followed by a dedicated station for Blerick in January 1869 and the Venlo-Nijmegen railway line in 1883. The opening of a railway carriage workshop in 1889 created additional employment and contributed to growth and urbanisation.

After years of debate about joining Venlo, Blerick was merged with that municipality on 1 October 1940. Blerick was liberated from German occupation on 3 December 1944. The Drie Decembersingel commemorates that date. Until Venlo was liberated, Blerick remained under fire.

Fort Sint-Michiel was built on the western bank of the Meuse between 1641 and 1643. In 1831, Fort Leopold was constructed between the existing fort and the river. The Frederik Hendrik Barracks were built on the site of Fort Sint-Michiel between 1910 and 1913. In 2010, the surviving parts of the old fort were excavated.
