Gerard Gordeau was born on 30 March 1956 in the Netherlands. Kyokushin Karate champion, World Savate Champion, and one of the eight fighters who competed at UFC 1 in 1993—one of the most historically significant events in combat sports history. At UFC 1, he reached the final, defeating Kevin Rosier and Teila Tuli before losing to Royce Gracie. His performance helped introduce a global audience to the concept of mixed martial arts and demonstrated the effectiveness of his eclectic, striking-heavy approach. As a Kyokushin competitor, he won national and international titles, and his World Savate Championship demonstrates genuine versatility across multiple striking systems. He later became a coach and trainer, sharing his knowledge with the next generation of fighters. Gordeau holds an important place in MMA history simply by having been there at the very beginning.
