Intro

The biggest MMA promoter

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) began in 1993 as a professional mixed martial arts organization. According to its own description, it has reshaped the fight business and is now a global sports brand, media company, and the world's largest provider of pay-per-view events.

Fights take place in the Octagon, the octagonal cage that has become the sport's emblem.

Profile

Rules, safety and anti-doping

The UFC adopted in November 2000 the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts . In the years that followed, the American athletic commissions further developed these regulations, and on July 30, 2009 they were unanimously adopted by the Association of Boxing Commissions. They establish a single set of rules that applies across different jurisdictions.

The Unified Rules govern the judging criteria, fouls, prohibited substances, the number and duration of rounds, weight classes, medical requirements, and the fighters' clothing and equipment. Fouls include headbutts, eye gouges, biting, hair pulling, and spiking an opponent on their head or neck.

In terms of doping, the organization goes beyond what the regulations require: it has its own UFC Anti-Doping Policy, which it describes as the most comprehensive program in professional sports.

Events, talent pathways and in-house channels

The UFC organizes numbered pay-per-view events and Fight Nights throughout the year, with its own rankings for each weight class, a Hall of Fame and a record book.

There are separate pathways for developing talent: Dana White's Contender Series, where fighters compete for a contract, and Road to UFC for Asian talent. In addition, it has its own grappling division called UFC BJJ.

The organization has its own infrastructure, including the UFC Apex as a competition venue and the UFC Performance Institute for training and sports science, as well as the streaming platform UFC Fight Pass with an extensive video archive. Its social initiatives are carried out through the UFC Foundation.

Why this matters

Impact and meaning

From Controversial Event to Regulated Global Sport

The UFC played a key role in transforming MMA from a controversial novelty into a regulated professional sport. By being the first major organization to adopt the Unified Rules, it helped establish uniform rules, fixed weight classes, and medical requirements - all of which were completely absent in the sport's early days.

Commercially, the organization brought MMA global visibility, with dedicated country websites for Brazil, China, France, Japan, Korea, and Latin America, its own streaming service, and an extensive merchandise and gaming line. For fighters worldwide, a UFC contract is therefore the highest platform in the sport.
