Judo Association of the Netherlands

History and organization

Over the course of the twentieth century, Judo Bond Nederland built a nationwide structure around judo and related budo disciplines. The association developed districts, clubs, training programs, examinations, and competitions for athletes at various levels.

Since 2023 the members' council has been active. This council represents the seven districts and establishes the strategic framework within which the association's board operates.

Day-to-day operations are handled by the association's office in Nieuwegein. The board, staff, committees, and volunteers work together to ensure the association's continuity and development.

Activities and role

The JBN organizes and supports activities in judo, jujitsu and aikido, from club development and recreational sports to national competitions and elite sport.

The federation provides training courses, dan examinations and support for trainers, examiners, judges and other officials. For judo, the JBN organizes competitions, selection programs and talent development, among other things.

Safe sport, volunteering, club support and the development of a modern organization are also part of the federation's broader role.

Membership and Structure

The JBN consists of affiliated clubs and seven districts. The members’ council represents the districts and appoints the association’s board, which has final responsibility for the federation’s functioning.

In addition to the board and federation office, the JBN works with national committees, project groups, athletes’ committees, and a large group of volunteers. This structure gives members influence over the federation’s direction and support in day-to-day practice.

Impact and meaning

The JBN brings three budo disciplines together within a single Dutch sports structure. This makes it possible to connect clubs, athletes, training programs and competitions at a national level.

For young athletes, the federation offers a pathway from initial exposure and club training to exams, competitions and selection. Experienced practitioners continue to have opportunities for further development, education, officiating, volunteering and engagement with the broader budo community.
