Lambertus ‘Bep’ van Klaveren was born on 26 September 1907 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He is the only Dutch boxer ever to win an Olympic gold medal—a record that still stands today.
He turned professional at just 14 years old in 1921, and his exceptional technique and featherweight speed quickly brought him national recognition. His defining moment came at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, where he won gold in the featherweight division on home soil—one of the most celebrated moments in Dutch sporting history.
He continued competing at the highest level, winning the European Featherweight title in 1938. After retiring, he became a respected boxing trainer, passing on his knowledge to the next generation. His younger brother Piet also boxed for the Netherlands at the 1952 Olympics, cementing the Van Klaveren family name in Dutch boxing history.
