The history of Rotterdam as a combat sports city begins with boxing. Neighborhoods such as Crooswijk became associated with a lively club scene and a strong local boxing culture. The best-known example from Rotterdam is Bep van Klaveren, who won Olympic gold in the featherweight division in 1928.

After the war, Rotterdam boxing clubs and trainers continued to form an important foundation. From the 1970s onward, kickboxing, Muay Thai, and free fighting were added. Pioneers, gyms, and early events paved the way for modern MMA and grappling culture.
