Almere's martial arts identity Almere is closely linked to Remy Bonjasky, who the K-1 World Grand Prix in 2003, 2004 and 2008 and 2010 his own Bonjasky Academy in Almere.

A diverse martial arts landscape has developed around his name, including kickboxing, boxing, MMA, wrestling, taekwondo, Tang Soo Do and krav maga, spread across the various districts.

A city in districts

Almere is made up of districts such as Almere Stad, Almere Buiten and Almere Poort, and martial arts follow that structure. Gyms and training locations are spread throughout the city, from business parks to neighborhood sports halls and school gyms.

As the city grew rapidly, its martial arts scene did not emerge from a centuries-old tradition, but from new gyms that grew alongside the population.

History

History and heritage

Almere's martial arts history is relatively young, just like the city itself. Days Gym was founded in 2006 and offers kickboxing, boxing, MMA, and wrestling. In 2010 opened Remy Bonjasky, nicknamed 'The Flying Gentleman', his academy in Almere.

This gave the city a direct connection to the golden age of K-1 kickboxing, when Dutch fighters dominated the world stage.

For kickboxing, boxing and MMA are the Bonjasky Academy, Days Gym, The Fighter's Firm in Almere Poort, Fightmasters and SimsonGym well-known venues. Taekwondo Academy Almere is affiliated with the Dutch Taekwondo Association and trains in Stedenwijk and Tussen de Vaarten.

In Almere Buiten Sportschool Shim Kung teaches les in Tang Soo Do, the traditional Korean martial art, under head instructor Roy Starke (5th dan Tang Soo Do, 1st dan Hapkido). Protect Invest provides krav maga-classes there with IKMF-certified instructors.
