Historical development

Indigenous peoples of North America had diverse wrestling traditions before European colonists arrived. During the colonial and early American periods, European styles were added, such as collar-and-elbow, Cornish wrestling, Cumberland wrestling, Scottish Backhold, and catch-as-catch-can.

In the nineteenth century, wrestling grew into a popular public sport at fairs, festivals, and athletic clubs. After the American Civil War, freestyle wrestling emerged as a distinct sport, while American schools and colleges developed their own rules and competition traditions.

From intercollegiate competitions to the NCAA

The first intercollegiate dual meet is generally dated to 1903, between Yale and Columbia. In 1905 , the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association held its first tournament. In 1928 , the first NCAA wrestling championships took place.

NCAA rules developed differently from the international rules. As a result, collegiate wrestling evolved into a distinctly American form of competition, with its own control, starting-position, and scoring rules. University programs and high-school competitions expanded significantly, especially during the twentieth century.

Organizations and competitions

College competitions are organized within various frameworks, including NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, NAIA, NJCAA, CCCAA, and NCWA. USA Wrestling is the national organization for American international wrestling styles and should be distinguished from the bodies that organize the individual college competitions.

Simon Fraser University formed an important Canadian connection to American college wrestling. The specific competition in which a team competes depends on the organization, the season, and the applicable eligibility rules.

Weight classes and competition health

College wrestling uses weight classes that may vary by organization and season. Participation may require an official weight assessment and a minimum weight. Responsible weight management should take hydration, body composition, and medical guidance into account.

Rapid dehydration or extreme weight loss is not a safe sports strategy. The current rules of the NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, or NCWA determine which weight procedures apply.

Injuries and infections

Intense physical contact can cause injuries to the knees, ankles, wrists, shoulders, and skin. Concussions, cauliflower ear, overuse injuries, and prepatellar bursitis are also known risks.

Skin-to-skin contact can facilitate the spread of impetigo, MRSA, ringworm, and herpes gladiatorum. Clean clothing, showering, mat cleaning, and not training with a contagious condition help reduce the risk.

In the event of a possible head injury, infection, open wound, or unexplained swelling, an athlete should seek medical attention and only return after receiving clearance.

Scholastic wrestling

At the high school and middle school levels, people usually refer to it as scholastic wrestling. The NFHS sets the rules for it. Scholastic matches generally use three two-minute periods and do not have the same collegiate riding-time system.

At youth tournaments, folkstyle may be offered alongside freestyle and Greco-Roman. The age category, governing body, and state determine the exact rules.
