Kempo

What is Kempo?

Kempo, also written as Kenpō or Kenpo, is a broad name for several East Asian martial arts. The kanji 拳法 can be translated as “fist method” or “method of the fist.”

The term does not refer to a single worldwide curriculum. Some systems emphasize punches and kicks, while others combine these with joint locks, throws, ground work, forms, meditation, or self-defense scenarios. The precise meaning depends on the school and its lineage.

Chinese, Japanese, and Okinawan influences

Kempo is often associated with the transmission of Chinese martial arts to Japan and Okinawa. However, its historical development was not a straight line from Shaolin. Organizations sometimes use stories about monks, temples, and ancient transmissions as part of their tradition; the precise historical basis varies by system.

In Japan, Kenpō may be used as a general term for a predominantly striking-oriented martial art, while in the name of a specific ryū it has its own meaning. Some systems are Japanese in organization but contain Chinese, Okinawan, or other regional influences.

Important Japanese systems

Shorinji Kempo was founded in 1947 by Doshin So. It combines hard techniques, soft controls, and philosophical training within its own Japanese organization. Nippon Kempo was developed by Muneomi Sawayama in the 1930s and uses protective equipment in a competition format involving striking, throwing, and ground fighting.

Okinawan organizations sometimes use Kenpō as an alternative name for a karate variant or for a related discipline alongside karate and kobudō.

Kempo in Hawaii and the United States

An influential modern development emerged in Hawaii and later on the American mainland. The lineage surrounding James Mitose, William Kwai Sun Chow, and Ed Parker is often mentioned in the history of American Kenpo, but the precise claims regarding family ties, schools, and transmission are a matter of debate.

Ed Parker developed and systematized his own American Kenpo in the United States. His approach combined rapid combinations and self-defense drills with elements from the systems he had studied. American Kenpo is therefore a modern American development, not the same as Shorinji Kempo or traditional Japanese Kenpō.

Training in Kempo

Training varies by school, but may include basic techniques, combinations, forms, partner exercises, controlled sparren, locks, throws, ground fighting, and scenario-based self-defense. Some schools use animal forms or Chinese movement patterns; others follow a clearly Japanese or American system.

Nippon Kempo emphasizes protected competition training involving striking, throws, and ground fighting. Shorinji Kempo combines physical training with philosophical and social development. American Kenpo often uses an extensive catalog of named self-defense exercises. None of these curricula represents all Kempo styles.

High-risk techniques are trained only under expert supervision and with appropriate control. The entry describes training categories, not the execution of joint-locking or striking techniques.

Main styles

The name Kempo may refer to, among others, Shorinji Kempo, Nippon Kempo, American Kenpo, Okinawan Kenpō systems, and various Chinese or Chinese-Japanese schools. Despite the shared name, their histories, organizations, ranking systems, and competition rules are not interchangeable.

Kempo and karate

Kempo and karate may include similar punches, kicks, and forms, but a particular Kempo school may also place greater emphasis on combinations, controls, throws, or self-defense drills. There is no universal technical boundary between all Kenpō and karate styles.

Kempo in the Netherlands

According to Dutch Kempo organizations, the discipline developed independently from the late 1950s and early 1960s onward. Various lineage accounts mention repatriates, former KNIL soldiers, and Indonesian influences, particularly Kuntao and Pencak Silat. This history differs by school and is therefore presented as organization-specific tradition.

Dutch Shaolin Kempo sources mention Carl Faulhaber and Gerard Meijers as important developers of a Dutch hybrid form. These accounts describe Indonesian-Chinese movements combined with Japanese karate and budo methods. “Largest school” or “founder” is not used as an independent national ranking.

Dutch organizations and schools

In the Netherlands, Shaolin Kempo, Yin & Yang Kempo, American Kenpo, and Shorinji Kempo are among the styles offered. Organizations and platforms appearing in Dutch sources include the Nederlandse Federatie Krijgskunsten, Kenpo Karate Nederland, Shaolin Kempo Kai, and individual schools such as Shaolin Ch’uan Fa Utrecht. Their current recognition, affiliated schools, and competition activities may change over time.

Yin & Yang Kempo

Yin & Yang Kempo is described by Dutch providers as a style that combines soft, flowing movements with explosive action. The precise Chinese lineage, curriculum components, and history in the Netherlands should be understood within the sources of the relevant organization.

American Kenpo

American Kenpo was developed by Ed Parker in the United States based on his studies with William Kwai Sun Chow and other influences. The system is known for its structured approach with named training sequences and an emphasis on fast combinations and self-defense scenarios. It is not the same as the Dutch Shaolin-Kempo lineage.

Shorinji Kempo

Shorinji Kempo was founded in Japan in 1947 by Doshin So. The system combines physical training with philosophical education and uses both hard and soft technical categories. Its presence and organization in the Netherlands should be distinguished from American Kenpo and Dutch Shaolin Kempo schools.

Train safely

Kempo training may include striking, kicking, throwing, and control techniques. Train with a qualified instructor, clear rules, and appropriate protective equipment. Stop if you experience pain, dizziness, or loss of control. De-escalation and avoiding violence take priority over any technique; self-defense training does not guarantee safety.
