Kempo

Chinese, Japanese, and Okinawan influences

Kempo is often associated with the transmission of Chinese martial arts to Japan and Okinawa. However, its historical development was not a straight line from Shaolin. Organizations sometimes use stories about monks, temples, and ancient transmissions as part of their tradition; the precise historical basis varies by system.

In Japan, Kenpō may be used as a general term for a predominantly striking-oriented martial art, while in the name of a specific ryū it has its own meaning. Some systems are Japanese in organization but contain Chinese, Okinawan, or other regional influences.

Important Japanese systems

Shorinji Kempo was founded in 1947 by Doshin So. It combines hard techniques, soft controls, and philosophical training within its own Japanese organization. Nippon Kempo was developed by Muneomi Sawayama in the 1930s and uses protective equipment in a competition format involving striking, throwing, and ground fighting.

Okinawan organizations sometimes use Kenpō as an alternative name for a karate variant or for a related discipline alongside karate and kobudō.

Kempo in Hawaii and the United States

An influential modern development emerged in Hawaii and later on the American mainland. The lineage surrounding James Mitose, William Kwai Sun Chow, and Ed Parker is often mentioned in the history of American Kenpo, but the precise claims regarding family ties, schools, and transmission are a matter of debate.

Ed Parker developed and systematized his own American Kenpo in the United States. His approach combined rapid combinations and self-defense drills with elements from the systems he had studied. American Kenpo is therefore a modern American development, not the same as Shorinji Kempo or traditional Japanese Kenpō.

Yin & Yang Kempo

Yin & Yang Kempo is described by Dutch providers as a style that combines soft, flowing movements with explosive action. The precise Chinese lineage, curriculum components, and history in the Netherlands should be understood within the sources of the relevant organization.

American Kenpo

American Kenpo was developed by Ed Parker in the United States based on his studies with William Kwai Sun Chow and other influences. The system is known for its structured approach with named training sequences and an emphasis on fast combinations and self-defense scenarios. It is not the same as the Dutch Shaolin-Kempo lineage.

Shorinji Kempo

Shorinji Kempo was founded in Japan in 1947 by Doshin So. The system combines physical training with philosophical education and uses both hard and soft technical categories. Its presence and organization in the Netherlands should be distinguished from American Kenpo and Dutch Shaolin Kempo schools.

Train safely

Kempo training may include striking, kicking, throwing, and control techniques. Train with a qualified instructor, clear rules, and appropriate protective equipment. Stop if you experience pain, dizziness, or loss of control. De-escalation and avoiding violence take priority over any technique; self-defense training does not guarantee safety.
