Early Brazilian interstyle fights

In the early twentieth century, fights between practitioners of different styles were organized in Brazilian circuses and at demonstrations. An often-cited early example is the 1909 match in which capoeirista Francisco da Silva Ciríaco faced Japanese jiujitsuka Sada Miyako. Newspapers and magazines described such encounters as spectacles and tests of different fighting methods.

The term Vale Tudo only came into widespread use later. Around 1959 and 1960, it became associated with the television program Heróis do Ringue in Rio de Janeiro, where fighters from different backgrounds faced one another. The Gracie family was involved in this scene and also organized the Gracie Challenge, public or private challenges in which Brazilian jiu-jitsu was tested against other styles.

BJJ, Luta Livre, and the Rio scene

The Brazilian Vale Tudo scene was marked by longstanding rivalries, particularly between Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Luta Livre. Euclydes Hatem, known as Mestre Tatu, is associated with the development of Luta Livre as a Brazilian form of submission wrestling. Matches and challenges between representatives of both traditions contributed to the development of cross-training.

Some early television and arena fights were brutal and offered less protection than modern matches. Incidents involving serious injuries, refusals to tap out, or public disorder contributed to criticism of the format and later calls for oversight and standardized safety rules.

From the underground scene to major events

From the 1960s onward, much of Vale Tudo took place in dojos, small venues, and regional circuits. In the 1980s, fights involving Rickson Gracie and Rei Zulu once again drew significant public attention. Events such as Noite das Artes Marciais in 1984 and Desafio - Jiu-Jitsu vs Luta Livre in 1991 brought the rivalry between Brazilian martial arts communities to a wider audience.

Events outside Rio, such as Capoeira vs Chute Boxe in Curitiba in 1993, also contributed to the development of a broader Brazilian interstyle scene. Participants and results are sometimes described from the perspective of the teams involved in historical sources; claims about general stylistic or personal superiority are therefore not adopted as established judgments.

UFC, PRIDE, and internationalization

Rorion Gracie and Art Davie drew inspiration from the Brazilian challenge tradition for the first UFC in 1993. Royce Gracie won UFC 1 by making three opponents submit. The event brought interstyle competition to an international audience, but the UFC was not simply an unchanged copy of every Brazilian Vale Tudo event.

In Japan, the Vale Tudo Japan series helped increase attention for international interstyle fights from 1994 onward. PRIDE Fighting Championships, founded in 1997, combined influences from Vale Tudo, Shooto, wrestling, jiujitsu, Muay Thai, and other disciplines, and became an important promoter of modern MMA.

Vale Tudo and the Gracie Challenge

The Gracie Challenge was a series of challenges and demonstrations through which members of the Gracie family sought to show the effectiveness of their Brazilian jiu-jitsu against other fighting styles. The matches are important to the history of BJJ and MMA, but they selected participants and circumstances and therefore do not prove that one style is superior in every situation.

Brazilian promotions

WVC and IVC brought together Brazilian fighters and international participants in the 1990s. Their events helped shape the careers of several future MMA fighters. The organizations' history, locations, and exact competition rules should be examined separately for each edition.

Vale Tudo and modern MMA

Vale Tudo provided an important historical impetus for the idea that a modern fighter must be able to strike, grapple, and fight on the ground. However, MMA emerged from multiple Brazilian, Japanese, American, and international developments. It is therefore more accurate to describe Vale Tudo as an important precursor and influence, rather than as the sole origin of MMA.

Terminology

In historical sources, Vale Tudo, No Holds Barred, and early MMA may be used interchangeably. The meaning depends on the country, period, organizer, and rules. Modern organizations generally use Mixed Martial Arts for the regulated form of the sport.
