Introduction

History of this sport

From individual disciplines to MMA. The history of MMA is about bringing different fighting styles together. Stand-up techniques from boxing and kickboxing are combined with wrestling and ground fighting. For martial artists in Amsterdam, this also means taking a different approach than training in a single discipline: transitioning between the different aspects is just as important as the techniques themselves.

A broad martial arts foundation. Amsterdam has a distinctive kickboxing culture, but MMA also requires takedowns, positional control, and submissions. A strong stand-up foundation is valuable, while learning to defend against takedowns and work safely on the ground are essential additions.

Free fight and the modern training model. Terms such as free fight and vale tudo are part of MMA’s broader history. In a modern MMA class, the different aspects are deliberately linked: from maintaining distance and entering a clinch to executing a takedown and continuing the fight on the ground. This sets comprehensive MMA training apart from a schedule where the disciplines are offered separately.

Local connections

The connection between martial arts. MMA offers practitioners in Amsterdam a way to develop different martial arts skills together. A boxer learns to handle takedowns, a wrestler learns to deal with punches and kicks, and a grappler learns to transition from standing to the ground. Training partners with different backgrounds make this exchange practical.

Youth and self-control. For young people, a carefully supervised martial arts class can provide an opportunity to develop discipline, teamwork, and respect for boundaries. Ask Amsterdam schools offering youth classes how they promote safety and respect, and how they keep parents informed about their child’s progress.

City and region. The martial arts community extends beyond the city limits. Trainers and athletes can take classes or work together at various locations in and around Amsterdam. When choosing a local option, the current class address, schedule, and supervision remain decisive.
