Introduction

History of this sport

From De Ring to De Pugilist. The history of boxing in Eindhoven runs through a series of boxing gyms and the people who passed on their knowledge. Eric van den Heuvel started in 1982 at De Ring, founded by Jac Serton. There, he trained under Serton and Phinus de Corte. Later, he boxed at De Pugilist, where he met Koos van Dorst and Jos Prinsen. His career shows how a young boxer could develop within local clubs before going on to mentor the next generation himself.

A new club in 1997. After his time at clubs including Champs and Muscle Fit, Van den Heuvel worked with Hans Janssen to set up their own boxing gym. In late 1997, they opened The Golden Gloves on Mecklenburgstraat, together with Dirk Renders and Koos van Dorst. From the start, there was room for both recreationalists and competitive boxers. The club therefore offered not only training but also a pathway to competitions under the Dutch Boxing Federation.

Progress and champions. Van den Heuvel won his ninth Dutch title in 2002 and then devoted himself entirely to training boxers. The Golden Gloves outgrew its first premises and moved to Bedrijvenweg in 2005. The Dutch Boxing Federation describes the club as a place where both young people and adults trained, and where champions were developed across several weight classes. This growth connected Eindhoven’s old boxing gyms with a new, broader club culture.

Boxing in a former church. In 2021, Eindhoven gained another boxing venue: Patrick Mesters established 040 Boxing Gym in the former Heilig Hartkerk at Ploegstraat 3. When it opened, the Dutch Boxing Federation described the training ring and plans for a separate competition ring. The church provides a striking setting for the sport, but is just one chapter in a boxing history being written in several places across the city.

Local connections

A connection between boxing schools. Eindhoven’s boxing history is shaped by encounters between clubs, boxers, and trainers. Van den Heuvel trained successively at De Ring, De Pugilist, Champs, and Muscle Fit before becoming involved in founding The Golden Gloves. Trainers from earlier clubs later also taught at the new club. Rather than a break between old and new, this created an unbroken line of learning, boxing in competitions, and teaching.

Boxing for more than one group. The Golden Gloves started with recreationalists and competitive boxers side by side. The Dutch Boxing Federation later also described the club’s youth work and social role. This shows that a boxing school in Eindhoven is about more than national titles: there is also room for people who want to learn technique, young people walking in for the first time, and athletes who want to train together.

A city with different training spaces. The sport of boxing moved with The Golden Gloves from Mecklenburgstraat to Bedrijvenweg. Later, 040 Boxing Gym found a home in the former Heilig Hart Church. These locations make the development of boxing visible in the city. They also show that the sport is not tied to a single building: the people, classes, and clubs carry the story forward.
