Introduction

History of this sport

Punch began before the war. In 1939, Cees Dielemans founded Tilburg's first official boxing club: Punch. The club started in Akkerstraat and later moved to premises in Schijfstraat. This gave boxing a permanent place in Tilburg's community life.

Championships at Koningswei. Punch organized competitions and brought the Southern Netherlands Championships to an auction hall on Koningswei in 1951. That same year, Dielemans left for Amsterdam, and the first Punch club ceased to exist. Boxing did not disappear from the city, however.

New clubs, familiar names. One of its successors was D.S.Z., active from 1964 to 1976. Cees de Beer, who boxed in 152 bouts himself and had trained under Dielemans, was a co-founder. In 1979, he founded another club; from 1986, it bore the name Punch as a tribute to Dielemans. De Beer closed the club in 1992.

A history of passing it on. Through Dielemans and De Beer, boxing technique and competitive experience continued to circulate between generations in Tilburg. Their clubs had different names and addresses, but the ring remained a place where new boxers from the city took their first steps.

Local connections

A ring in various parts of Tilburg. From Van de Akkerstraat and Schijfstraat to the auction hall at Koningswei, boxing matches and training sessions in Tilburg were part of city life. The 1951 Southern Netherlands Championships showed that the city could also serve as a competition venue.

Clubs changed, but the boxing tradition remained. The first Punch closed in 1951. D.S.Z. and the later club founded by Cees de Beer carried the sport forward in their own way. Their history is not an unbroken story of a single association, but of boxers and trainers who followed one another in Tilburg.
