Introduction

History of this sport

Bas Rutten and his early years in martial arts. Bas Rutten was born in Tilburg on February 24, 1965. The film Enter the Dragon, starring Bruce Lee, inspired him to take up taekwondo. In his own account, he names Roland Jansen as his first instructor. Karate and taekwondo shaped his early martial arts background; around the age of twenty, in the mid-1980s, he also took up thai boxing.

From thai boxing to international fame. Rutten said that he won his first thai boxing match after six weeks of training, with a body kick that knocked out his opponent after 43 seconds. He later trained with Cor Hemmers, who also worked with fighters including Ramon Dekkers and Semmy Schilt. Rutten went on to become best known in MMA, as a three-time King of Pancrase and UFC heavyweight champion.

A series of kickboxing events of its own. In the 2000s, Tilburg hosted several kickboxing events. The Gentleman Promotions Fightnights took place in the city from 2005 to 2009. In 2007, there was also a Balans Fight Night. The city was therefore not only the birthplace of well-known fighters, but also a place where competitions were held.

Tayfun Özcan and the community center. Özcan was born in Tilburg on August 11, 1991. He said that the municipality offered activities for young people at a community center in the neighborhood where he grew up. Kickboxing was one of those activities and immediately appealed to him. He later trained for ten years at Balans Gym under Halit Kurt. His introduction to the sport grew into a career with international titles, while he continued to identify strongly with Tilburg.

Enfusion at T-Kwadraat. On September 27, 2025, Enfusion x 8TKO took place at T-Kwadraat. Thian de Vries won a world title that evening. The event added a chapter to Tilburg’s history of fight nights: in addition to the earlier Fightnights, the city also hosted Enfusion matches and international title fights.

Local connections

A community center as a first step. Özcan’s story begins not only with fights and titles, but also with activities for young people in his Tilburg neighborhood. The municipality offered opportunities at the community center, including kickboxing. He was enthusiastic right away. This introduction links a local youth activity to the later career of a world champion.

Tilburg as birthplace and home. Rutten and Özcan were both born in Tilburg, but each has a distinct connection to the city. For Rutten, his birthplace is a starting point in his life story. In interviews, Özcan also speaks of his lasting pride in Tilburg and his wish to stay there. Their careers connect the city with international combat sports without requiring every training venue to be in Tilburg.

Events alongside daily training. The Gentleman Promotions Fightnights, Balans Fight Night and Enfusion at T-Kwadraat show another side of local kickboxing. Gyms provide space to learn and train; fight nights bring fighters and audiences together. On September 27, 2025, Tilburg hosted an Enfusion event that also featured a world title fight.
