Profile

The story

A career behind the scenes. Palle worked as a promoter, manager and matchmaker. His career involved more than one hundred European title fights and more than one hundred world title fights, spread across several major and smaller boxing organizations. His contribution lay in organizing matches and connecting boxers with opponents and audiences.

Several generations of boxers. The boxers he worked with included Ayub Kalule, Tom Bogs, Jimmy Bredahl, Thomas Damgaard, Brian Nielsen, Chris Christensen, Jørgen Hansen, Steffen Tangstad and Mikkel Kessler. Gert Bo Jacobsen and Sarah Mahfoud were also part of his promotional practice. Those relationships involved promotion and management, not a role as their technical trainer.

International names in Denmark. In the mid-1960s, Palle was Sonny Liston's European manager. He also brought boxers such as Carlos Monzón, Larry Holmes, Emile Griffith, Ken Buchanan and John Conteh to Denmark. A notable later event was the bout between Mike Tyson and Brian Nielsen, which he organized in 2001.

A family business built around boxing. Throughout his career, Palle worked with his father Thorkild and his daughter Bettina. After he retired from boxing in April 2022, Bettina continued the boxing project. He died on 27 August 2022, at the age of 88.

Method

Training approach

Matchmaking across borders. Bringing together boxers from different countries was a recurring part of Palle’s work. His collaboration with Mike Segal connected Danish and South African boxing; in 1999, among other things, he discussed a possible bout between Abbey Mnisi and Jesper Jensen.

Building audience engagement beyond national borders. In 1999, Palle emphasized Thulani Malinga’s popularity with Danish spectators. According to him, Malinga could also draw a large audience against another foreign boxer. The appeal of a match therefore did not have to depend solely on a Danish participant.
