Top 5 jump ropes to buy

When buying a jump rope, you have far more choice nowadays than you did a few years ago. They come in all kinds of colors, types, and price ranges, from a simple plastic rope to a weighted speedrope with interchangeable cables.

So pay close attention to what matters most to you when buying a jump rope: are you mainly looking for speed and technique, or would you rather train with more resistance for your arms and shoulders? To make things a little easier, we have put together a top 5 of jump ropes.

Top 5 jump ropes

Jump rope Winning F-16 Leather Black

1. Winning F-16 Leather Black

The classic leather jump rope from Winning, handmade in Japan. Weighing 300 grams and made with a genuine leather rope, it is flexible and warm to the touch, and gets better the more you train with it. You can precisely adjust the length using the screws in the handles, up to a maximum of 240 cm. A true favorite among serious boxers.

Jump rope Rival Weighted Jumprope

2. Rival Weighted Jumprope

This jump rope from Rival is the most versatile one on this list: the handles contain removable weights, and it comes with two interchangeable cables (one regular and one heavy). Train without weights for speed and coordination, or add weight for extra resistance and arm strength. Adjustable up to 305 cm and includes a storage bag.

Jump rope Booster Thai P1 Blue

3. Booster Thai P1 Blue

A Thai jump rope with wooden handles and a thick, heavy cable, widely used in Muay Thai training. The handles are hollow and can be filled with water or sand, allowing you to make your training even more demanding. The heavier cable trains the shoulders, wrists, and forearms more intensively than a lightweight jump rope.

Jump rope Rival Comfort Grip Speedrope

4. Rival Comfort Grip Speedrope

This speedrope has tennis-style handles with a perforated non-slip grip, keeping it comfortable even with sweaty hands and during long, intensive cardio sessions. The PVC-coated steel cable rotates smoothly and quickly at any rotation speed. Adjustable up to 305 cm, including a storage bag.

Jump rope Rival Jump Rope RJR4 Blue

5. Rival RJR4 (various colors)

The entry-level model in the Rival jump rope range: lightweight (114 grams), with a soft 305 cm PVC cable that rotates smoothly and quickly without tangling. A reliable and affordable jump rope for anyone looking to improve their footwork, fitness, and coordination, suitable for both adults and children.

Leather, plastic, and other jump rope materials

The main difference between jump ropes lies in the material used. You can find jump ropes made of leather, metal, vinyl, and plastic, and each material offers a different feel and purpose.

A leather jump rope is a good choice because its heavier construction makes it easier to jump with and less likely to curl than a plastic version. Plastic and vinyl are somewhat lighter but also somewhat cheaper, making them an excellent entry-level option.

Metal (steel) cables, such as those used in most speedropes, fall somewhere in between in terms of feel: they are thin, fast, and create little air resistance, making them ideal for speed training and double rotations (double unders).

Another point to consider when buying a jump rope is the handle. A jump rope often feels best with a slightly larger handle. The presence of ball bearings is also beneficial, as they allow the rope to rotate more smoothly and quickly.

What can you use a jump rope for?

Jumping rope has been around for centuries and is mainly known to most people as a toy for children, complete with familiar songs.

In recent decades, it has increasingly been used seriously by adults, for example in the sport of Rope Skipping. You can use it to lose weight quickly, as well as to train your fitness and muscles.

It has been used in boxing for years because the results become visible quickly, especially in terms of conditioning and the leg muscles. Boxers traditionally use it as a regular part of their warm-up, but also as standalone cardio training between rounds of punch and pad work.

With various exercises, from basic jumps to double rotations, crossovers, and running steps, you can keep making it more challenging for yourself. Using ankle weights, for example, can also make an exercise more demanding and effective. There are even special training schedules that allow you to track your progress.

We generally find a metal jump rope the most comfortable because of its good grip, durability, and smooth rotation, although a leather jump rope remains a popular, classic choice among experienced boxers.
