Why do boxers and kickboxers use knuckle guards?

Good boxing gloves are among the most important pieces of equipment for boxing, kickboxing, MMA, and Muay Thai. They protect your training partner, but also your own hands.

Sometimes, even with the best boxing gloves, you can still get sore knuckles. Advanced fighters, in particular, can punch quite hard and need extra protection for their knuckles.

A good solution is so-called knuckle guards. These are used by serious boxers and kickboxers to prevent hand injuries. A good knuckle guard absorbs and distributes the impact of blows, significantly reducing the risk of bruises, fractures, and even permanent damage.

Improved fit in your boxing gloves

In addition, a knuckle guard can ensure a better, tighter, and more comfortable fit in your boxing gloves. This will give you a better feel when punching and significantly improve the effectiveness of your techniques. You will also have more confidence in your power punches due to the extra protection for your vulnerable hands, knuckles, and fists.

If you're serious about your training in boxing, kickboxing, or other forms of "stand-up fighting," knuckle protectors are an essential part of your sports bag. In martial arts that involve a lot of hard punches, hand and wrist injuries are the most common. Furthermore, problems and aches in your knuckles tend to linger the longest.

Maximum protection for your hands

So protect your hands as well as possible throughout your entire sports career to keep them healthy. With a good knuckle guard, such as those from Rival and Winning, you can go all out in every training session knowing that your knuckles are maximally protected.

You'd rather not miss a training session, let alone be out of action for a few weeks or even months, due to injuries that can be relatively easily and inexpensively prevented with a good set of handwraps and a knuckle guard.

"Preventive measures include proper hand wrapping techniques, using protective gear during sports activities, and adhering to hand safety practices."

In the early days of boxing, fights were held with bare fists, and boxing gloves were only introduced around 1900. This was to reduce head injuries, but every serious fighter also knows that boxing gloves also protect your hands.

If you have good equipment, such as handwraps, knuckle guards and boxing gloves, you will also be able to train better and more comfortably to get the maximum result out of yourself. And isn't that what every fighter wants?

Better pressure distribution and impact protection than just larger boxing gloves.

You could argue that you could also use larger (heavier) boxing gloves to better protect your hands, but that doesn't immediately solve the problem of sensitive knuckles.

A larger boxing glove does not provide better impact distribution at the point of impact, as a knuckle guard does. Furthermore, knuckle guards are generally made of materials with a much higher density and impact-neutralizing properties than the "softer" padding of boxing gloves.

Injury prevention through the use of knuckle guards:

  • Absorbing shocks and impact: knuckle guards are usually made of special gel or foam that dampens the impact of blows to your knuckles. This protects the delicate bones in your hands.
  • Reduce bruises and fractures: by absorbing and reducing shocks and impact, knuckle guards significantly reduce the occurrence of bruises. The chances of more serious injuries such as fractures from repeated blows are also significantly reduced.
  • Protect the skin surface: knuckle guards are often designed with smoother surfaces to protect your skin. This will also reduce the risk of cuts and abrasions on your knuckles compared to fighting with bare hands or only using handwraps and boxing gloves.

Improved comfort and performance in your boxing glove

  • Improved fit in your boxing gloves: knuckle guards provide better padding in (good) boxing gloves. This makes your hand feel more compact and you will notice that you get a more supportive and comfortable fit in your boxing gloves.
  • Even impact distribution: knuckle protectors distribute the pressure (and impact) of your punches more evenly across your fists. This drastically reduces peak stress on specific areas.
  • Better hand support: knuckle guards, in combination with handwraps, provide a more stable position for your hands. Together with your handwraps, they help to keep the most vulnerable bones and ligaments in your hands firmly in place during punches and punch combinations.

Long-term benefits of knuckle guards

  • Extend and improve your training duration: by significantly reducing aches, discomfort, and injuries, knuckle guards ensure that you can continue training much more consistently and for longer periods without having to take extra rest.
  • Prevent and protect against permanent damage: knuckle guards help prevent chronic injuries to your bones and joints. Damage that can occur in the long term in (hard) contact sports such as boxing, kickboxing and MMA.
