The History of Winning Boxing Equipment

The company’s official history begins in May 1937, when the Sugibayashi Seisakusho workshop was founded. At first, it made both baseball gloves and boxing equipment. In 1951, it shifted its focus entirely to boxing. The name Winning was introduced in 1957, followed by the company name Winning Sports in 1961.

Winning is a Japanese manufacturer headquartered in Tokyo. Its production division moved to Fukushima in 1963. A 2018 factory profile published by the municipality of Nihonmatsu describes the production there of boxing gloves, headgear and punching mitts, among other items.

The 2018 municipal factory profile describes how employees carefully make each product by hand. They learn from experienced colleagues and develop their skills through practice and hands-on experience. The same profile mentions special versions, colors, embroidery and printing.

Winning combines Japanese craftsmanship with close attention to comfort, padding, and finish. The brand is one of the most sought-after names in boxing and, for many boxers, its gloves are the holy grail.

Professionals share that high regard. In a 2020 British Boxing News roundup, Nick Ball and Derrick Osaze were among those who named Winning their favorite glove brand. Professional heavyweight Ed Latimore praises the soft, protective feel in his own glove recommendations. Ryan Songalia also reported in 2015 that both Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao often trained with Winning gloves.

Laces let you adjust the fit around your wrist precisely; it helps to have someone assist when putting the gloves on and fastening them. Velcro makes it easy to put them on and take them off yourself, for example when switching between exercises during training. Both options have their own advantages. The official MS-600 specifications list leather for this boxing glove. Winning USA lists synthetic leather for the FG-2900 headgear. Wipe down the outside with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Use a suitable leather conditioner for smooth leather; keep synthetic leather protectors clean by wiping them down carefully and letting them dry.

The FG-2900 has an open-face design with cheek guards. The FG-5000 also has a horizontal face bar across the face. Yes. Winning offers the CM-5 Oval, CM-10 Curved, CM-20 and CM-65 High-Grade focus mitts, CM-15 focus paddles, CM-25 training sticks and the CM-85 strike pad, among others. The target areas and grips vary by model. As a trainer, you can use them to work on combinations, precision, reactions and timing.

Winning offers, among other products, the elastic VL-B, the non-elastic VL-C, and the VL-H handwraps. There are also the KVL-R handwraps and the NG2 gel protector for the knuckles. When wearing them with gloves, consider the total space around your hand: handwraps and extra knuckle protection take up more room together.

Open up the gloves after training and let them air out thoroughly outside your gym bag. Wipe the outside with a soft, slightly damp cloth. For smooth leather, you can use a suitable leather conditioner; Winning also offers the F-73 care kit for this purpose. Avoid sprays for cleaning the inside, and do not put boxing gloves in the washing machine or dryer.
